{"id":10637,"date":"2026-08-06T14:59:54","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T14:59:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.essecieffe.it\/osmed-report-2025-how-is-pharmaceutical-expenditure-evolving-in-italy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T14:59:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T14:59:54","slug":"osmed-report-2025-how-is-pharmaceutical-expenditure-evolving-in-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.essecieffe.it\/en\/osmed-report-2025-how-is-pharmaceutical-expenditure-evolving-in-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"OsMed Report 2025: how is pharmaceutical expenditure evolving in Italy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AIFA has published the new <strong>OsMed Report 2025<\/strong>, which provides an updated overview of the use of medicinal products in Italy and the main trends in pharmaceutical expenditure.<\/p>\n<p>Among the aspects that emerge most clearly:<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc8a <strong>Pharmaceutical expenditure continues to rise<\/strong>, reaching <strong>\u20ac39.3\u202fbillion<\/strong> (+6% compared to 2024), of which more than \u20ac28\u202fbillion is borne by the National Health Service (SSN).<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udcc8<strong> Among the medicinal products with the greatest impact on pharmaceutical expenditure<\/strong>, <strong>PD\u20111\/PD\u2011L1 inhibitors<\/strong> and interleukin inhibitors remain in first place, both categories showing growth compared to 2024 (+9.1% and +2.8% vs 2024).<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc89 In 2025, a <strong>decline was recorded in the consumption of systemic antibiotics in community care <\/strong>(\u20137.9% in DDD and \u20138.6% in expenditure), alongside a slight increase in purchases by public healthcare facilities (+2.4%).<\/p>\n<p>\ud83e\uddd2 In the <strong>pediatric population<\/strong>, a reduction in the use of antibiotics is observed, while the use of psychotropic medications continues to increase.<\/p>\n<p>\u2728 After years of growth, in 2025 expenditure for <strong>innovative indications covered by the dedicated Fund<\/strong> recorded a <strong>19.4% decrease<\/strong>, settling at <strong>\u20ac700\u202fmillion<\/strong> \u2014 a reduction mainly linked to the expiry of the innovation period for certain molecules and the entry of new medicines with conditional innovativeness.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83e\uddec <strong>Expenditure on advanced therapies (ATMPs)<\/strong> continues to grow, reaching \u20ac222.6\u202fmillion in 2025 (+14.5% compared to the previous year). <strong>Spending on orphan drugs is also increasing<\/strong> (+7.9%), amounting to \u20ac2.55\u202fbillion.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udf0dIn comparison with other European countries, <strong>Italy records pharmaceutical expenditure of \u20ac750 per capita<\/strong>, lower than Germany and Austria but higher than several other countries analysed. <strong>Italy also stands out for its leading position in the use of biosimilars<\/strong>, which account for 70.3% of expenditure and 71.4% of consumption, while the share of generic medicines remains more limited than in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udcca The Report confirms the role of demographic factors, therapeutic innovation, and prescribing patterns in shaping the evolution of pharmaceutical expenditure, highlighting the importance of data in guiding medicine\u2011related policies.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udcc4 To consult the full Report \ud83d\udc49: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.essecieffe.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AIFA_Rapporto_OsMed_2025.pdf\">AIFA_Rapporto_OsMed_2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd17<strong>AIFA source<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aifa.gov.it\/-\/aifa-pubblica-rapporto-osmed-2025\">https:\/\/www.aifa.gov.it\/-\/aifa-pubblica-rapporto-osmed-2025<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AIFA has published the new OsMed Report 2025, which provides an updated overview of the use of medicinal products in Italy and the main trends in pharmaceutical expenditure.
