EMA publishes the Report on the EU Drug Repurposing Pilot Project

The European Medicines Agency (EMA), together with the national regulatory authorities of the European Union, has made available the final Report of the pilot project on drug repurposing, launched in 2021 to test a reference framework supporting non‑profit organisations and academia.

Despite the challenges, the pilot demonstrated the potential of repurposing as a strategy to broaden access to innovative therapies, reducing time and costs compared with the development of new medicines. EMA recommends consolidating the regulatory framework and strengthening support for academic and non‑profit initiatives, considered the ‘champions’ of this approach.

The Report represents an important step towards building a stable European framework for repurposing, capable of combining innovation, sustainability and equity of access to care
